Amino acid compositions in heated carbonaceous chondrites and their compound-specific nitrogen isotopic ratios

چکیده
A novel method has been developed for compound-specific nitrogen isotope compositions with an achiral column which was previously shown to offer high precision for nitrogen isotopic analysis. We applied the method to determine the amino acid contents and stable nitrogen isotopic compositions of individual amino acids from the thermally metamorphosed (above 500 °C) Antarctic carbonaceous chondrites Ivuna-like (CI)1 (or CI-like) Yamato (Y) 980115 and Ornans-like (CO)3.5 Allan Hills (ALH) A77003 with the use of gas chromatography/combustion/isotope ratio mass spectrometry. ALHA77003 was deprived of amino acids due to its extended thermal alteration history. Amino acids were unambiguously identified in Y-980115, and the δN values of selected amino acids (glycine +144.8 ‰; α-alanine +121.2‰) are clearly extraterrestrial. Y-980115 has experienced an extended period of aqueous alteration as indicated by the presence of hydrous mineral phases. It has also been exposed to at least one post-hydration short-lived thermal metamorphism. Glycine and alanine were possibly produced shortly after the accretion event of the asteroid parent body during the course of an extensive aqueous alteration event and have abstained from the short-term post-aqueous alteration heating due to the heterogeneity of the parent body composition and porosity. These carbonaceous chondrite samples are good analogs that offer important insights into the target asteroid Ryugu of the Hayabusa-2 mission, which is a C-type asteroid likely composed of heterogeneous materials including hydrated and dehydrated minerals.

The amino acid composition of the Sutter’s Mill CM2 carbonaceous chondrite
We determined the abundances and enantiomeric compositions of amino acids in Sutter’s Mill fragment #2 (designated SM2) recovered prior to heavy rains that fell April 25–26, 2012, and two other meteorite fragments, SM12 and SM51, that were recovered postrain. We also determined the abundance, enantiomeric, and isotopic compositions of amino acids in soil from the recovery site of fragment SM51....
متن کاملCalcium isotopic compositions of chondrites
We report mass-dependent and mass-independent Ca isotopic variations in nine chondrites from three groups: carbonaceous, ordinary and enstatite chondrites. There is about 0.25‰ per amu, i.e., 1‰ in Ca/Ca, variation in chondrites: carbonaceous chondrites have the lightest Ca isotopes, enstatite chondrites have modeled bulk Earth like Ca isotopes, and ordinary chondrites are in between. The corre...
متن کاملPristine Pre-accretionary Signatures in Cm Chondrite Silicates: a Common Parent-body with the Co Chondrites?
Introduction: The Mighei-like carbonaceous (CM) chondrites are one of the most abundant and aqueously altered group of carbonaceous chondrites [1–4]. The organic molecules present and the effects of aqueous alteration have been extensively studied in the CM chondrites [e.g., 1,3,5]. As many CM chondrites are extensively aqueously altered, the compositions and formation histories of their anhydr...
متن کاملDistribution and stable isotopic composition of amino acids from fungal peptaibiotics: assessing the potential for meteoritic contamination.
The presence of nonprotein α-dialkyl-amino acids such as α-aminoisobutyric acid (α-AIB) and isovaline (Iva), which are considered to be relatively rare in the terrestrial biosphere, has long been used as an indication of the indigeneity of meteoritic amino acids. However, recent work showing the presence of α-AIB and Iva in peptides produced by a widespread group of filamentous fungi indicates ...
متن کاملTitanium isotopic composition of CAIs from the Axtell and Leoville carbonaceous chondrites
The Ti isotopic compositions previously determined for “normal” (i.e., non-FUN) calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) from primitive chondrites display relatively small, but resolvable mass-independent anomalies, most likely of nucleosynthetic origin [1-10]. However, the limited dataset makes it difficult to conclude whether this range of compositions reflects the degree of heterogeneity in t...
